**Position Summary**
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Data Science position beginning August 25, 2025. The department seeks engaging teacher-scholars who will inspire our undergraduate and graduate students while complementing the research areas of the department.
Applications from all areas of data science are encouraged. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience in artificial intelligence, specifically deep learning, natural language processing, and/or data mining.

Responsibilities: The typical teaching load is twelve credits per semester. The successful candidate will be expected to:* Teach effectively in a variety of courses, including service courses as well as data science courses;
* Maintain appropriate research and scholarly activities in data science;
* Participate in updating and revising the department’s curriculum;
* Assist with student advising and program development;
* Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.

**Required Qualifications**
* Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or closely related field by the end of the first academic year;
* Demonstrated ability to teach a broad range of Data Science, Statistics, and Mathematics courses to students with diverse backgrounds and skills;
* Commitment and ability to maintain an active program of scholarship.

**Preferred Qualifications**
* Experience with deep learning, natural language processing, and/or data mining;
* Experience collaborating with industry partners on data science projects;
* Proficiency in programming languages typically used in data science such as Python, R, and SQL, and familiarity with data manipulation and visualization libraries, and version control.
* Experience or interest in directing students on research/independent study projects.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse offers undergraduate programs in Statistics, Statistics with Actuarial Science concentration, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Mathematics Education. The department intends to begin offering an undergraduate Data Science program beginning in 2025. The department also offers a master’s program in Applied Statistics and a collaborative master’s program in Data Science.
