As a Bridge Repair Operator, you will use our foundational drivers to play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
This opportunity is based at our Rappahannock Bridge Office, located in Virginia’s Piedmont region, stretching from the Blue Ridge Mountains east toward Richmond. Culpeper District is responsible for 10,465 lane-miles of state-maintained roads, 1,700 bridges, and large culverts in the counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock.
Core responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Working as part of a crew performing preventative and restorative structural maintenance activities on bridge structures and large culverts.
* Performing manual labor to include the formation of footers, abutments, and wing walls.
* Placing and finishing concrete, erecting steel beam bridges, and installing timber, and concrete bridge decks.
* Operating a 25-ton dump truck, rubber tire front-end loader, backhoes, truck-mounted crane, forklift, and various types of hand/power tools.
* Conducting preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment/tools.
* Performing work over, in, and around water from boats and scaffolding at various heights.
* Working during emergencies including incident management, snow removal, and hurricane preparedness. Performance of duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
**Minimum Qualifications**
* Skill in the operation of construction-related equipment.
* Skill in using hand and power tools.
* Skill in carpentry.
* Skill in concrete forming, and finishing
* Basic skills in welding.
* Knowledge of highway/bridge maintenance methods and safety practices.
* Ability to perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment and tools.
* Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
* Capability to conduct math calculations to measure and layout constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
* Possess a valid driver’s license.
* Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (minimum Class B with Air Brake endorsement) within 11 months of employment.
**Additional Considerations**
* Experience in the maintenance and/or construction of roadways, bridges, facilities, or comparable large-scale construction projects.
* Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, and concrete placement.
* Valid CDL
* Experience in fabrication or welding steel components.
* Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements.

Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise, applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles before receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. **VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.**
Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, and terrain, and standing for long periods. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense.
