**Job Duties**

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a Construction Inspector to help drive our agency forward in providing a quality transportation system throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia! As a VDOT Construction Inspector, you will inspect all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects under the general supervision of senior construction staff, to ensure construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications. During the course of their employment, employees in this position may be required to work on projects located anywhere within the geographic boundaries of the Culpeper district (counties of: Fauquier, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Madison, Greene, Albemarle, Orange, Louisa, Fluvanna).

Responsibilities include tracking and maintaining materials documentation for projects by developing detailed daily written records (DWRs) and diaries which correlate to the contractor’s scheduled construction activities. The incumbent will assist in maintaining project files, document all daily occurrences, meetings, and communications, to provide specific information on changes in the contractor’s scope of work. Will keep jobsite photos and assist the Project Inspector and Construction Manager with issuing monthly Constructor Performance Evaluations (CPEs) for prime and each working subcontractor. Will also assist with closing out projects and maintaining as-built drawings. May be required to operate or work in the vicinity of devices containing radioactive materials and emitting low levels of ionizing radiation.

**Minimum Qualifications**

* Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, inspection methods and materials testing.

* Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents.

* Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.

* Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

* Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment.

* Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files.

* Skill in the use of computers and software applications.

* Safety shoes required.

* Valid driver’s license required.

Position requires unrestricted mobility, including, at times, unrestricted mobility in irregular terrain; working at heights and in confined spaces, making visual observations; the ability to stand for long periods of time; the ability to work in a variety of environments affected by, but not limited to, such elements as dust, vapors, heat, and moisture; and the ability to lift 50 lbs.
**Additional Considerations**

* Experience in highway and bridge construction inspection with a DOT or consultant inspection firm, or experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.
* Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards and terminology.
* Proficient in Site Manager or other project management software.
* Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine minor adjustments to construction plans.
* Knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental, and equal employment opportunity guidelines and regulations as they relate to transportation construction projects.
* Possession of current certifications and completion of fall protection and confined space training.
* DEQ: Inspector for Erosion Sediment Control (ESC IN); Inspector for Storm Water Management (SWM IN)
* Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety
* Guard Rail Installer Training (GRIT)
* American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Level I (CCWA) OR WACEL Concrete I Certification
* A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Drafting, or related field desired.
