VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its Construction Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Construction Inspector vacancy. This position inspects all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects under the general supervision of senior of supervisory staff, ensuring construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications and providing a quality transportation system for the traveling public.

Required skills for job & position:

* Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry and trigonometry
* Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine minor adjustments to construction plans
* Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards and terminology
* Knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental and equal employment opportunity guidelines and regulations as they relate to transportation construction
* Skill in the use of computers and software applications
* Ability to work independently
* Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents
* Ability to provide work direction to others in the activities of a large construction project
* Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files
* Ability to work in the vicinity and operate devices utilizing low-level ionizing radiation
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public
* Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment
* Ability to perform physically demanding work in field conditions such as using testing equipment, lifting, climbing, stooping, working at heights, in confined spaces and making visual observations

**Minimum Qualifications**

* Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry and trigonometry
* Valid driver’s license
* Skill in the use of computers and software applications
* Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, inspection methods and materials testing
* Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents
* Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection
* Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment
* Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public

**Additional Considerations**

* Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards and terminology
* Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine minor adjustments to construction plans
* Possession of current certifications and completion of fall protection and confined space training
* Knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental, and equal employment opportunity guidelines and regulations as they relate to transportation construction projects
* Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety
* American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Level I (CCWA) OR WACEL Concrete I Certification
* Asphalt Field Level I
* Experience in highway and bridge construction inspection with a DOT or consultant inspection firm.
* Asphalt Field Level II
* Radiation Safety USDOT HAZMAT Certification (Nuclear Gauge)
* DEQ: Inspector for Storm Water Management (SWM IN)
* Proficient in AASHTOWare Project (AWP) or other project management software
* DEQ: Inspector for Erosion Sediment Control (ESC IN)
* Guard Rail Installer Training (GRIT)
* Flagger
* Pavement Marking
* Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection
* CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course
* A combination of training, experience, or education in engineering, drafting, or related field desired
* Soils & Aggregate Compaction

This position is classified as designated to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
