VDOT’s Culpeper district Location and Design Section is seeking a self-motivated Roadway Design Engineer to design, manage and produce right of way and construction roadway plans for a wide range of transportation projects using automated engineering and design software. The ideal candidate will:
* Design and review improvements for highways, streets, intersections, and bicycle/ pedestrian facilities, including geometric design, grading, traffic control devices, work zone and construction phasing. Incumbent will utilize standards from VDOT, AASHTO, FHWA, MUTCD and other design criteria to develop and review plans and specifications.
* Utilize 3D computer-aided drafting software and other civil engineering software packages (MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, Civil 3D or similar 2D & 3D software) in accordance with industry codes and standards to develop roadway improvement plans and 3D meshes.
* Develop innovative transportation designs tailored to unique project locations, including roundabouts, thru-cuts, R-Cuts, and other innovative intersections and interchanges.
* Use problem solving skills to develop conceptual designs, estimates, and supporting documentation to address identified safety and operational issues.
* Serve as project manager to include responsibility for preparing quantities and estimates, developing and maintaining schedules, monitoring project activities, and preparing and presenting engineering data. Take creative approaches and identify opportunities to reduce costs and accelerate schedules.
* Assist in design efforts with project personnel in all disciplines and departments for projects of varying size and scope. Take part in a multi-disciplinary team to advance project development from preliminary studies to construction.

**Minimum Qualifications**
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences. Ability to plan and schedule work.
* Experience in roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials.
* Experience applying design standards, specifications, policies and procedures.
* Experience applying civil engineering principles as they relate to roadway design and standard design technical knowledge.
* Skill in building networks and relationships with employees, field personnel, contractors, manufacturers and FHWA representatives.
* Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering and design software.
* Knowledge of principles of roadway safety that impact roadway standards and special designs.
* Skill in delivering exemplary customer service.
* Valid Virginia Driver’s License required.
**Additional Considerations**
* Experience in roadway design and project management for transportation projects.
* A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired.
* Engineering in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
