VDOT’s Richmond District, Equipment Shop Team is excited to announce they are seeking an Operator – Heavy Equipment Hauler / Fuel Transporter to work in the Richmond Equipment Shop located in Colonial Heights. In this position, you are expected to lead, coordinate and transport equipment and supplies using tractor trailer and accessories. Operate roadway maintenance equipment and perform preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks during routine and emergency response operations. Must have ability to work independently. Skill in operation of a wide variety of automotive vehicles, trucks, wreckers, and other equipment used in highway maintenance and repair. Have knowledge of general equipment shop practices and procedures. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions to include technical equipment repair manuals. We are looking for someone with advanced skill in the operation of tractor trailer and lowboy to haul equipment, fuel and supplies.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications
* Ability to gather data and prepare reports
* Ability to perform heavy manual labor
* Skill in the use of hand and power tools used in repair of equipment
* Skill in the use of computers and software applications
* Safety shoes required
* Ability to obtain a Class A CDL and DOT Medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter; Must comply with DOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment
* Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures
* Advanced skill in the operation of tractor trailer and lowboy to haul equipment and supplies
* Ability to lead and train others
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and follow oral and written instructions.
Additional Considerations
* Experience leading and training others
* Experience in equipment shop operations
* A combination of training, experience, or education in Vehicle Operations, or related field desired
* Experience driving CDL required equipment
* Experience in maintenance or construction related activities
* Experience in equipment operation and performing mechanical repairs of equipment
* Valid Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements
Special Instructions
Verification of work history, DMV records check, and a fingerprint-based criminal history check will be conducted prior to first day of employment. Pre-employment physical will be required, to include a drug screen for CLP or CDL holders. Safety shoes are required in performance of job duties, which are a reimbursable item. NOTE: Employees hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
