The South Hill Residency is seeking experienced individuals to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/ attachments) and perform manual labor.
Our Operator Maintenance respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for inclement weather and other types of hazardous road conditions, prepare work zones and perform traffic control, participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects, complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
***Additional Wage positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date at any location within the South Hill Residency.***
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

**Minimum Qualifications**
* Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
* Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
* Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
* Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
* Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
* Possession of CDL and DOT medical card and ability to maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
* Safety shoes required.
**Additional Considerations**
* A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Construction, or related field desired.
* Skilled in roadway maintenance and construction.
* Ability to perform preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
* Skilled in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up.

Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
Verification of work history, DMV records check, and a fingerprint-based criminal history check will be conducted prior to first day of employment. Pre-employment physical will be required, to include a drug screen for CLP or CDL holders. Safety shoes are required in performance of job duties, which are a reimbursable item. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available.
Employees hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training.
