Post-Doctoral Researcher in Transportation Economics
Cambridge, MA
The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) is carrying out a multi-year project on the Economics of Transportation in the 21st Century (ET21C) with support from the U.S. Department of Transportation through the National Science Foundation. A post-doctoral researcher on transportation economics, who will work at the NBER’s Cambridge, MA, headquarters, will conduct independent research while also participating in the ET21C initiative, which is directed by Edward Glaeser (Harvard University), James Poterba (MIT), and Stephen Redding (Princeton). Potential topics might include the economic analysis of transportation infrastructure, the effects of new transportation technologies such as vehicle electrification and autonomous vehicles, the role of the transportation sector in reducing carbon emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change, the impact of transportation policy and initiatives on the labor market and the macroeconomy, and the distributional effects of access to transportation services. The researcher will also support the development of a data archive that will support future research in transportation economics and will help plan the ET21C initiative’s annual conference.
Applicants must have completed their PhD by June, 2025. Applications from researchers who are just completing their PhDs, as well as from researchers who may be on leave from a college or university position, are welcome. The NBER may be able to sponsor the researcher for an H1B visa. The 12-month salary is $110,000; the NBER will also make a contribution for health insurance and provide office space at our Cambridge, MA headquarters.
