This position performs advanced level technical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mobile and base station radios, repeater station radios and consoles, telephone systems, computer radar equipment, and related electronic communications hardware; makes calibration checks of test equipment, making approved modifications and alterations to system hardware; maintains inventory of parts and supplies; and may provide leadwork direction to others. Performs related work as required.
Normal working hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but are subject to change based on work needs; hours of work may include weekends, evenings and holidays.
Responsibilities include:
* Install, repair, and maintain electronic radio equipment in vehicles and buildings so that effective communications are maintained in compliance with FCC regulations by making performance checks on equipment installations; repairing base radio equipment; replacing and repairing electronic radio equipment in vehicles; examining, cleaning, and replacing parts, wiring, cable, surge protectors, and power lines; providing user instruction in operating electronic communication equipment; logging results of technical performance measurements on electronic equipment
* Calibrate test equipment required for installation, maintenance, and repair so that equipment complies with FCC frequency tolerances for radio transmitters by comparing frequency measuring equipment with the national standards; tuning and adjusting electronic equipment; reporting equipment deficiencies to supervisor; measuring equipment performance.
* Maintain and repair base and repeater station two-way radio equipment and control consoles so that equipment functions effectively and efficiently when needed by repairing and replacing parts; troubleshooting equipment; maintaining and repairing consoles and equipment with required tools while checking frequently for proper operation.
* Alter and/or modify electronic communications equipment so that intended communications results are achieved by making minor modifications to existing systems; modifying or replacing equipment as approved by supervisor; ensure that equipment is operational and reliable
* Install, repair, and maintain electronic communication hardware so that equipment functions to its fullest capacity by servicing public address systems; repairing and maintaining sirens and speed measuring devices, such as computer radar; making periodic checks, assuring continuous operation; assuring proper preventive maintenance on electronic communication equipment.
* Provide leadwork direction, as necessary, so that employees are trained in the proper use of tools and repairs are made without error by training staff on repair procedures; directing work assignments and following through on completion of projects.
* Maintain parts inventory so that equipment repairs can be completed as needed by recording all parts used in repair work; advising supervisor when parts are needed for repairs; assisting in performing inventory tasks.

### **Minimum Qualifications**
* FCC Radio-Telephone license or be an APCO (Association of Public Safety Communications Officers) or NABER (National Association of Business and Educational Radio) certified technician or equivalent;
* A two year degree in Electronics, Communications Systems Installation and Repair Technology, computers, computer peripheral equipment and local and wide area computer networks, or equivalent or certificate from a military communications/electronics school or one (1) year experience as a radio, TV or electronics equipment repairman, and/or radio station engineer;
* One (1) year of experience that includes 1) Skill in troubleshooting techniques, soldering and handling sensitive electronic equipment and parts; 2) Knowledge of radio communication procedures and ability to operate communication equipment; and 3). Knowledge of microprocessor, digital, analog and electromechanical technology.
* Experience working with computers, computer peripheral equipment and local and wide area computer networks.
* Report writing and recordkeeping.
* Organizational and interpersonal skills sufficient to work as a productive member of a team and to establish/maintain effective working relationships with staff and public.
* Conflict resolution/human relation skills sufficient to negotiate, resolve issues, read situations and settle disputes equitably by finding common ground and cooperation
* Oral, written, and customer service communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate complex information to a wide variety of audiences and meet expectations and requirements of staff and customers.
* Time management skills sufficient to make decisions and meet deadlines sometimes with incomplete information, under tight deadlines, and pressure by unforeseeable events and/or emergencies.
### **Preferred Qualifications**
* Aircraft Avionics Technician certified.
* Knowledge of department and division programs, policies and procedures sufficient to make program decisions that are compatible with other policies and programs in the division and department.
* Knowledge of communication systems and process used on wildland fire incidents.
### **Additional Requirements**
This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record.
