VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its Traffic Operations Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Senior Traffic Signal Technician vacancy. The Senior Traffic Signal Technician performs diagnosis, repairs, fabrications, installations and maintenance for a variety of specialized electronic, electrical, traffic control equipment in the traffic management systems (TMS) for the Fredericksburg District.

This position must participate in the ITS/Traffic Signal 24/7 on-call rotation.

Required Skills For Job & Position

* Knowledge of traffic operations, principles, and applications
* Must be detail-oriented, can problem solve, and manage time efficiently
* Knowledge of electrical and electronic applications
* Knowledge of applicable federal, state, department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards related to electronic and ITS equipment
* Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and competing priorities
* Ability to climb towers up to 120 feet, operate a bucket truck, and to work in confined spaces
* Ability to perform physical labor
* Considerable knowledge and experience in the electronics field including troubleshooting, circuit analysis, and repair of electrical and electronic equipment
* Ability to work at heights and in heavy traffic conditions
* Ability to perform troubleshooting at four levels – system, unit, board, and component levels
* Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple assignments and competing priorities
* Skill in the use of computers and web-based applications
* Ability to keep detailed and accurate records
* Ability to use electronic diagnostic tools and equipment, as well as hand and power tools
* Ability to develop and maintain Excel and data access spreadsheets and programs
* Ability to coordinate and work with others
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
* Working knowledge of installation, maintain and repair of canopy signage, traffic signal and detection equip, CCTV, RFID, microprocessors, servers, video cameras and imaging equipment, and intercom system
* Ability to design, modify and fabricate electronic equipment, and read and interpret electronic schematics and manuals
* Skill in equipment repair, fabrication and operation of electronic test equipment
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers
* Ability to physically perform hands-on signals and related structures and components and use all required equipment therein
* Knowledge of instrumentation, motor controls, telecommunication (including radio and fiber equipment), RF and video equipment, microprocessors, computers, and peripherals

Minimum Qualifications

* Knowledge of traffic operations, principles, and applications
* Knowledge of instrumentation, motor controls, telecommunication (including radio and fiber equipment), RF and video equipment, microprocessors, computers and peripherals
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in written form
* Knowledge of electrical and electronic applications
* Ability to serve in an on-call capacity and respond to emergencies within a specified period
* Skill in the use of computers and web-based applications
* Ability to develop and maintain Excel and data access spreadsheets and programs
* Skill in equipment fabrication, operation, and repair of electronic test equipment
* Ability to design, modify and fabricate electronic equipment; read and interpret electronic schematics, manuals and circuit boards and use to troubleshoot signal equipment
* Ability to physically perform hands-on inspections of signals, components, use required

tools, work at heights, in confined spaces, in proximity of moving traffic and in inclement

weather

Additional Considerations

* A combination of training, experience or education in electronics or related field desired
* Experience in the electrical trade
* IMSA Roadway Lighting certification
* IMSA Traffic Signal Level I or II technician certification(s)
* Substantial experience in the electronic field to include electronic board and component level repairs. Inventory experience for stocking and tracking inventory
* Commercial Driver’s License
* Experience in traffic signal repair and maintenance
* Progressively responsible experience in traffic signal installation, modifications, and system timings

This position is classified as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
